NORTH COUNTRY TRAIL ASSOCIATION
Central New York Chapter

The Central New York Chapter of the North Country Trail Association will celebrate National Trails Day with the opening of its newly completed trail section in Canastota on June 1st.

The 3.5 mile section is part of the North Country National Scenic Trail (NCT), which upon completion will span seven states from North Dakota to Eastern New York and total more than 4,200 miles - the longest continuous hiking trail in the United States.

The North Country Trail Association is a non-profit corporation founded to develop and maintain the North Country National Scenic Trail, or "North Country Trail."

Our Central New York Chapter, currently the only one in New York State, is building the Link Trail, part of which carries the North Country Trail, and part of which will be a designated side trail within the national trails system. This side trail segment provides a connection to the Finger Lakes Trail in Chenango County.

Special Offer…. For a limited time, you can join us at a special rate: only $18 for the first year.

There is something for everyone to do to help; plus you can work and hike with some great people-examples:

- Work Hikes: light brush cutting, trail tread repairs, installing markers and signs
- Trail Steward: "adopt" your very own trail section to love and maintain!
- Special Projects: construction projects such as bridge or walkway building
- National Trails Day: the first Saturday in June- hiking, working, dedications, and fun!
- Fund Raising, Public Relations, Liaison
- Just Support the Trail!

Connecting the Old Erie Canal State Park, Chittenango Falls State Park, Cazenovia's Gorge Trail, the historic village of Cazenovia, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, Lorenzo State Historic Site, Cazenovia College, Nelson Swamp Unique Area, Oxbow Falls County Park, Tioughnioga Wildlife Management Area, Madison County Dugway Forest, Muller Hill State Forest, and the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT).

And Consider This...

Connection to the Finger Lakes Trail links the route with Morgan Hill State Forest, Labrador Unique Area in Onondaga County, Pharsalia Wildlife Management Area and extensive state forests in Chenango County, and the Catskills.

National Connections...

The Link Trail is part of the national foot trail system. The Link Trail hiker turning east on the Finger Lakes Trail (FLT) can reach the Appalachian Trail (Maine to Georgia), or by continuing west on the FLT through Allegheny National Forest, the North Country Trail leads to North Dakota, while the Bruce Trail leads to Canada!

The Link Trail is open from the Finger Lakes Trail through Cazenovia, except for the sections noted on the map. You can continue via the Gorge/Link Trail to a trailhead near Chittenango Falls State Park.

The Link Trail is intended for foot travel only. Thank you for respecting the rights of landowners!

Link Trail & North Country Trail construction continues. Two new sections will open in 2002- from Bingley Rd. to Carey Hill Rd., and from Nelson Rd. to Canastota's Canal Museum!

A partnership of trail volunteers, private landowners, the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation, NYS Parks, Madison County, local towns & villages, the National Park Service, private foundations, civic organizations, and businesses is working to make this a premier off-road walking path.

The Link Trail leaves the FLT in a pine plantation, heading generally north to Crumb Hill Road. Turn left on the road and proceed 0.1 mi. to Wood Rd. Follow this road north. The first 0.7 mi. is drivable to a turn around. Do not block the entrance to a farm field or the driveways of the two camps there.

The trail continues alongside what is now a woods road, crosses Muller Hill Rd., Chapman Rd., and climbs north over Carpenter Hill then descends steeply to reach Rt. 80 just east of Jones Rd. A spur trail goes 0.6 mi. to Carpenter Hill Rd. just south of the entrance to Three Springs State Forest. Total dist. 6.9 mi.

Caution! The trail crosses an un-bridged creek just before Rt. 80. This creek may be impassable during spring run-off and because of beaver activity can be a wet crossing at other times. Our plan is to reroute this section or build a bridge at the present crossing. Use the Carpenter Rd. spur if you are uncertain about crossing the stream!

The trail is under construction between Rt. 80 & Dugway Rd. For now, follow Rt. 80 2.0 mi. to Sheds & then Dugway Rd. east to reach the next off-road trail section.

Parking and trailhead are located 2 mi. E of Sheds on Dugway Rd. Trail goes N then W. When reaching a dirt road at a 90º curve, turn N (right).

Trail descends, then climbs on an old wagon track crossing Damon Rd. Watch for a turn (right) off the road into the woods. Trail reaches Irish Hill Rd. Follow it N 1 mi. to Hardscrabble Rd. Turn right 0.1 mi.

Trail leaves road N into Nelson Swamp Unique Area and goes W to Constine Bridge Rd. Follow road N to Charles Rd. Take this road about 300 ft. to the trail (on right) through Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. Camping is available here for through-hikers by pre-arrangement.

Follow blue blazes through and beyond the park to trailhead parking area on Chenango St. at the south edge of the Village of Cazenovia. Total dist.: 10.4 mi. (Dugway Rd. - Cazenovia.

The North Country Trail is carried by the Link Trail and the Gorge Trail from the Holmes Rd. junction within the Tioughnioga WMA north to Carey Hill Rd. From trailhead on Chenango St. use sidewalk on west side of the street. Follow blue blazes and North Country Trail shields.

Many fine shops, restaurants, and historic homes are in the village. Visit Lorenzo State Historic Site. Look for stone work of historic structures along Chittenango Creek as you follow Cazenovia's Gorge Trail north on old rail bed.

The trail exits to the right across private property to reach Roberts Rd. In early 2002, the trail will be completed to Carey Hill Rd., another 1.2 mi. Cross Bingley Rd. and take Emhoff Rd. approx. 300 ft. where trail is on the left alongside the road.

From the end of the trail, a short road walk west on Carey Hill Rd. will take you to Chittenango Falls State Park. Future plans are for a trail connection to the park and to the Old Erie Canal Towpath Trail at Canastota. Total distance: 4.8 miles. For more information, please send an email to: Al Larmann
